by Jon on May 31st, 2011

VMware server is available in a couple different varieties, one of those is a free version that will allow anyone to turn their physical machine into a cloud server. I have VMware server running on Ubuntu and CentOS server hosting a few different production and development servers. Using VMware is a great option with the ability to create images and snapshots of your servers, which is a good backup system.

Below is quick how to for installing VMware server on CentOS 5.5, this is not comprehensive but you can complete an install from these few steps. This is for the 64 bit version of CentOS and VMWare server.

yum -y install gcc gcc-c++ kernel-headers kernel-devel
cd /usr/src
# here is where you would download VMware, this requires a login to get the software as well as a serial number
#wget VMWARE.rpm
rpm -ivh VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.x86_64.rpm
/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl
/var/lib/vmware/Virtual\ Machines/
# this step will download an iso image to give you the ability to install new virtual server using this iso
wget http://mirror.singleedge.com/pub/centos/5.5/isos/x86_64/CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-1of8.iso
